There are times in this life where I know I’m lucky to be living it. They are few and far between, what with all the modern-day pressures we face, the multiple channels of rejection we are subject to now that social media has taken over the world, and the complete lack of gratitude that being out of touch with the Earth has created in us.

This video is amazing. I’m going to use it as a reminder of what we can see and feel in this lifetime. I’m also going to use cheese, mayonnaise, music and comic books to do the same, but the video is today’s star.

Yeah. I know I’m rubbish these days. You don’t even have to think it. It’s just so. The past while has been spent job-hunting – an exercise I could certainly be fitter at. Cape Town is as dry as the bottom of a thirsty man’s beer. This makes things difficult. I’ve been pacing around the house, eating copious amounts of Ghost Pops (ew), and NOT doing anything constructive. I’m chain-smoking. And I’ve even considered taking up the childhood pastime of nail-biting to help quell the anxiety. Germ-ridden nails? Gimme some, yo.

Freelance work is cool and all. You can hang in your pajamas, watch things in between drafts of stuff, and gloat as you imagine the rest of the world at their desks, hating life. But the things is, I want to do that too. I am untrained in the art of ‘chilling’. It does not suit me. I need to be in an office, nose to the grindstone. I get off one other people’s crazy ideas and bad moods. It reminds me what a wonderful thing human nature is. I want to hug strangers, eat my lunch out of a Tupperware, drink cheap-ass coffee, and always be on the verge of a freak-out due to deadlines. I’ve been for a few interviews so far. It’s interesting to see what the bowels of Cape Town’s agencies look like these days. A lot different to what I had imagined while still in Dubai. How is it going? Weeeeeell… Not sure, to be honest. It’s hard to gauge by a smile whether or not someone is thinking “God, you are awful” or “I kind of like you. And by the way, your work is cool too”.

I’m in the process of waiting to find out if I make the grade at a rad place I’d really like to work at. Let’s hope I DO make the grade. I’m getting rather bored of pajamas.

Yeah. So. I know I’ve been a bit rubbish at keeping things up to date here, but it’s been a bit of a strange and exciting time. I’ve successfully moved my behind back to the lovely shores of Cape Town, where I’m now living with my awesome John. It’s taken a lot of planning and stressing to get back here, but it’s happened, and I am rather relieved. Nearly two weeks have passed since I’ve been back, and a lot of interesting things have happened. For example: it’s rained! Yeah, to most of you this sounds like a load of nonsense to get excited about, but I’d been in the dessert for three years. So there. I’ve seen some of my super-rad friends and family. And i found this:

I wandered into Antiques on Kloof yesterday, and this gorgeous piece of metal basically jumped into my lap and said ‘Please adopt me! I want your hands all over me every day for the rest of my rust-free life!’ It’s currently in for a service and a ribbon-changing, but it’ll be home in a day or two. Yesssss.

Wow. Suddenly, it seems as though my vast and undefeated countdown has reached its 20s. That’s quite rad. I didn’t think I’d make it this far. I’d imagined having my rotting corpse found in the streets of Barsha 1 by an innocent delivery boy from the Thai takeaway down the road. I’d probably have died in search of a decent coffee to help wile away some of the torturous hours. I guess I haven’t explained what I’m counting down for, have I?

The Explanation:

Well, I’d been toying with the idea of leaving Dubai for some time. I’d been through a few things that had led me to this headspace and I’d also chickened out a few times. But then I went back to Cape Town for my dear friend Ashley’s wedding and met someone who made me realise on the spot that I had to get my ass home at any cost. I was suddenly without the crippling fear that had kept me from moving home before. And so, I’m moving back to the ever-lovely Cape Town. Job-wise, I thought I’d try my hand at freelancing, and maybe get more living done than I’ve previously been able to do.

Yeah. There’s something to be said for snobbery in relation to dental products.
By simply backing down from my principles when purchasing dental floss earlier this week, I’d say I almost lost more than one of my teeth in nothing more than an attempt to take care of them. Before I go any further, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that nothing in life is certain, and that even your roll of dental floss can surprise you by running out at 11 pee em at night, leaving you in the position I’m about to elaborate on.

Now, I understand that foreign corner-store owners have their place in this world. (They’ll probably also be the only ones to have a place in this world post-apocalypse, considering the shit they manage deal with every day.) That place is to provide harassed, impatient people like myself with sub-standard products at ridiculous prices – all for sake of my saving a few minutes that will no doubt be spent watching HBO’s latest TV series. Oh, the ambition of my generation. There might also be a bag of Cheetos involved in this particular scenario at any given time, but let’s not tarry there for too long.

Now let’s step back for a second and look at the equation so far: Serious need for dental floss (OCD much?). Serious need for series watching. Convenient cornerstore. Sub-standard product. One would think I’d know better. Well, it did say ‘Made in Spain’. Whatcha gonna do? The Spaniards successfully colonised many countries when it was fashionable to do so. The pope was a Spaniard at some point. They play great football. They’re a pretty good-looking bunch. Of course I’m going to buy their dental floss. The packaging wasn’t too bad either. See?

I guess what I’m trying to say here is that this roll of floss turned out to be much like a party-girl-crackwhore. You find her in the strangest of places and you think ‘Shit. I’m going to live a little and try something new. Why the hell not?’ You go out, see what she’s about, and the next thing you know, you’re waking up the next morning with a sore bottom, cuts and bruises, and no wallet to speak of. You then think ‘I knew I should have gone with that sweater-and-pearls chick from down the road. The one my mum’s always trying to hook me up with.’ Sweater-and-pearls chick, in this case, being Oral B Satin floss, which I would have had to make a huge trek for.

I guess I should have a word with the store-owner about the company, er, products he keeps. And then maybe never go there again. Unless it’s for a big bag of Cheeto’s. The puffy ones.
